We’ve all heard crazy things about juice cleanses, but are they true? I’ve heard things like “you can only drink juice” or “you’ll drop pounds” or “all the toxins will be gone”. Not necessarily true! A juice cleanse is a great start to resetting and detoxifying your body and mind.
Let us start by saying that everyone’s body is different and everyone has a different experience. A juice cleanse can help with cleaning out your system, improve your energy, rehydrate your body, increase energy levels and helps digestion. Each juice is rich in vitamins and antioxidants that help to boost your immune system and fight diseases. Juices are also more filling, which helps fight against bored snacking and a sweet tooth. Feeling more satisfied can ease your mind when changing eat habits, like cutting out sugars or unhealthy foods. Plus, fewer sugars in your diet means radiant and clear skin!
What it doesn’t to do make you drop pounds quick – nothing is that easy! When you start a calorie-restricted diet or cut out carbs, you can lose up to eight pounds in water weight! Drinking pressed juice helps to clean out your body, but nothing can completely flush your system in just a few days. Adding juices to your diet can help you maintain a cleaner system. You can also eat! Clean and healthy snacks and protein is highly recommended. No “diet” or “cleanse” should ever tell you to stop eating! Your body needs protein and good fats like avocados or nuts.
Tips for a successful juice cleanse! Don’t let your ‘hanger’ upset those around you. Pack healthy snacks like kale chips, unsalted nuts or a protein shake. Drink plenty of water. Take it easy! Cleanses affect people differently, so don’t workout quite as hard until you’re ready. Meditate or take a yoga class to start. Changing eating habits can be difficult, try saying “I’m good” instead of “I can’t” to avoid that FOMO feeling.

The Day Before:
Ana, the owner of I Am The Juice Place, recommended to eat clean the day before starting a cleanse. That way I’m not completely shocking my body! I made myself a healthy breakfast – hard boiled egg and half of an avocado. Although I had a cup of coffee because it’s a part of my morning routine and I would feel lost without my caffeine. Haha! For lunch, I joined my family at Little Greek in Addison. It can be difficult finding healthier options at a restaurant, but I was able to get their light chicken kebabs with steamed veggies. I stopped by Whole Foods after lunch to grab some clean snacks for the next three days – kale chips, raw cashews, Navitas superfood bar (low sugars, vegan, pressed nuts and seeds), and an Oatmega protein bar (gluten free, grass-fed whey, non-gmo). I was all prepared! I finished running my errands and by the time I was done, it was already 9pm. I kinda fell off the wagon early and grabbed some fast food to eat before heading to bed. I made sure I portioned myself, didn’t use the sauces and skipped most of the french fries… not a proud moment, but I’ll do better the next thee days!
Ready for the day! I had a great night’s sleep and felt confident. I know it’s just a juice cleanse and it’s only three days, but I have a busy week ahead of me! Snap Kitchen’s sample party, vendors coming into my office bringing lunch day 2 and day 3, vendors taking us out for dinner and drinks, my brother coming over for family dinner – it’s a lot going on! That’s also why I chose to start my juice cleanse this week. It’s going to be tough, but I can tell myself that ‘I don’t need it’. It will help me to better adjust to cleaner eating habits afterwards. I ate an avocado half with my first juice in the morning. Then munched on some raw, unsalted cashews with my second juice. Then the third, then the fourth before I left the office. The hardest part wasn’t the lack of food but trying to keep up with drinking everything! Even with just water normally, I have a hard time making sure I drink enough during the day. I ended up rushing to drink some of the juices to make sure I was able to finish them before bed time.
I felt a little tired getting into the afternoon because I didn’t have my usual morning cup of coffee. My stomach hurt a little bit around lunchtime. Not quite sure if that was my body trying to figure out why it was only getting juice or because of the grease-filled lunch conversation I had with my coworkers talking about fatty foods. However, I felt good at the end of the day and looked forward to how I would feel in the morning.
I felt more energized, even though I had to use the bathroom a few times during the night. My body is definitely not used to drinking that much! My sleep was much better because I didn’t feel so full or bloated from a heavy or fatty meal. I started my first drink a little earlier so I didn’t feel rushed to finish them before the end of the day. It was a lot better! All of the drinks are pretty tasty so I was looking forward to drinking them. I had a full avocado for breakfast because I was a little hungrier and I just love avocados! The office had vendors bring in Zoe’s Kitchen, which was really hard not to eat… I did have a “salad” which was basically lettuce. Just lettuce. And four pieces of chicken so I could get some protein. The cookie was eyeing me from across the room, but I held strong! I was able to drink the first five juices before the end of the work day, then headed to a hot yoga class. When you’re on a cleanse of any kind, take it slow! You never know how your body is going to react so make sure you start with lighter workouts and ease yourself back into your routine. Yoga felt great though! It helped me focus my mind and get myself on track for the last day.
Overall, I felt like I had more energy throughout the day. My stomach was feeling great. I did have to run to the bathroom quite as bit, as you do when you drink a ton of fluids! I was starting to feel a bit healthier and cleaner on the inside.
I woke up feeling great and rested. I felt a little thinner and noticed I lost three pounds – probably all water weight, but losing weight wasn’t the goal. I wanted to give my system a flush, come out feeling cleaner on the inside and having more motivation to eat healthier. I went through the same routine as the first two days, drinking juices and snacking on avocado, cashews and kale chips. The taste of the juices and snacks were getting a little old, to be honest. It all tasted great, but when there’s other food in the office, it’s a little hard to want to be good. But I achieved my goal! I could feel a difference from the last day and the first day, for sure. It wasn’t a monumental change but it’s a start!
The cleanse and the experience was great! I was more aware of healthy snacking, slept better, had more energy throughout the day, able to focus more and felt cleansed on the inside. Three days was hard though. You really have to be in the right mindset, and I can only imagine how tough give days would be! I’m going to use this experience as a spring board into a better, healthier year!
Special thank you to Ana with I Am The Juice Place for all of the tasty juices!!
